California Window Tint Laws, Made Simple
What you can tint, how dark, and how our $100 legal rear-half special fits in.
What's legal on each window
| Window | California rule (Vehicle Code 26708) |
|---|---|
| Rear side windows | Any darkness |
| Back glass (rear window) | Any darkness, as long as the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides |
| Front side windows (driver & passenger) | Only clear film of 88% visible light transmission or lighter, and the glass with film must still let in at least 70% of light. In practice, front side windows must stay nearly clear |
| Windshield | Only a non-reflective strip along the top of the windshield. The rest must stay clear |
| Colors / mirror finish | Keep film non-reflective and avoid colored tints. We'll steer you to legal options |
What "the legal rear half" means
The rear half of your vehicle, the rear side windows and the back glass, is where California lets you go dark. That's exactly what our $100 special covers.
